OH! How I wish my photography skills-or lack thereof!-did justice to these! They fall so flat here on the PC screen...
But alas, I share just the same.
Definition number three: A sign or representation that stands for its object by virtue of a resemblace or analogy to it. Ahhhhhh. I like that :)
I've tried to achieve the better part of that definition here in this series. And a bit, in the foundation series. More than a circle; more than a mark, a mark made with intention and direction-with the objective of recalling something real and found in the earth to the viewer.
A first for me, truth be told!
I've always worked abstractly; going off route here and there as I went through a journaling series, and as little pieces of a series give voice to some semblance of reality.
But never all that indicitive of realism.
Until now. This definition speaks to me.
I don't want to recreate; God got it right the first time; I feel no need to attempt what's been done so beautifully before me!
I want to indicate, to point to, to take your mind, heart and spirit to, some thing, or place and causes you to sing!
Or, to weep.
Whatever it be, I have sought recognition in this series through the determined look at the definition of icon.
So I introduce you to this latest fun.
My current studio passion.
The analogy of what I see, and want to share with you.
Bringing me to singing~or to weeping, along with you.

Australia!

I'm going to Australia. Wait! I have to say that again!!! I'M GOING TO AUSTRALIA!!!!

Nearly eight years ago I was graced the amazing opportunity to make a quick visit to Sydney for my brothers wedding. This brief in and out made me want for much, much more of this amazing country and I've spent the time since coming back to the memories and prayerfully anticipating a return opportunity. But, it wasn't coming! I help two AU ten dollar bills in my wallet, peeking at them every once in a while to renew my faith in the dream~
And then my boys were able to make the trip. Wow.

What an amazing experience for them to grab hold of! So, I put my envy away :), helped them plan the details, and gave them my Aussie bills...gulp. I remember coming down the stairs with them in my hand and saying to John, 'Maybe I've just been holding onto these so long for this day that I can give them to my guys; not for my own use after all....'
And a mere week later, I get the call of calls!
The buzz to beat all buzzes!
The news to carry me into the next century!
Okay, it's obvious I know; an inviation to teach in Melbourne next April! Woot!

i finally did it

My oldest son has been prompting me, pleading with me, damanding of me!, that I update my personal art website for YEARS now! It has been, admittedly, tremendously out of date. Without the necessary knowledge to change it myself, or the cash flow to justify the cost of updating it, I continued, year after year, to just ignore it and fell to using my blog for updated work. It was somewhat effective and I continued to go this route until Karon Leigh told me about Icompendium. My eyes have been forever opened to beautiful, effective, art-supporting webdevelopment 'template' design site building! I got this site going from square one and was able to not only do it myself, but when an issue came up or I wanted to tweek something to personalize it, the administrator (site creator!) answered my emails near-immediately with easy to follow instructions on how to achieve my desired look. I. Love. IT! Just what web development should be :) kudos and more kudos. God bless this web developer and you will all see much, much more of my current work, offerings and creations! in love. trish

Encaustic Mixed Media: Innovative Surfaces and Techniques for working in wax

Ready, set, go! Lucky me lucky me! I got to write a second encaustic book and am thrilled to be seeing it coming to life! Due out in August, Encaustic Mixed Media is an indulgence in everything I've been putting my hand to since Encaustic Workshop hit the shelves in February of 2009. Delving into the hardware store, art supply, craft and thrift stores with eyes wide open to possibilities, this book offered me the opportunity to dispel 'no's' and prove the 'yes's' in encaustic rule! Look forward to posts in the coming weeks highlighting the mixed media products and techniques developed for Encaustic Mixed Media~things from plaster and tar to panpastel and wood icing, nothing is left untouched and unincorporated :) in love. trish

Jerry's Artarama 2010-1st edition

If you went looking for me last weekend you'd have found me in Raleigh, North Carolina. My goal in seeking teaching venues for 2010 was not exclusive to locations I was familiar with: Sure I'm returning to Oregon, Northern California and Colorado-when you find a good thing, stick with it! But, even more than bringing innovative encaustic creativity to these enthusiastically supportive venues, my goal was to branch out to states, cities and venues I haven't yet brought the goodness of encaustic to!
Raleigh, North Carolina-specifically Jerry's Artarama-was just such a place.
Expecting nothing less than a great experience, I received an over the top gracious welcome and eager reception by the entire staff-not just the event coordinator.
Despite a three hour delay in Baltimore, Sharon and Joe DiJiulio picked me up at the airport at 11:30pm and whisked me back to their home to indulge in their private studio space before fully engaging in Jerry's. What a delicious bonus! Inspiration abounds in unexpected places~

After three days of excited encaustic indulgence, I was returned from whence I came with ideas flowing and enthusiast contagion! As a result of this special connecting and experimenting at Jerry's I have two unplanned additions to my 2010 repertoire: This Friday I am taking a quick over night to Ontario (since I just happen to be investing in a 10 day trip to Michigan and its a mere 5 hours away :) to play in wax and new stuff with Emily Block at her shop and workshop space, Stamping Bella-www.stampingbella.com. Emily and her cohort Sheryl attended the three day at Jerry's and I do believe I've hooked at least these two new encaustic addicts :)

And, due to my stalker-like love of Ampersand and R & F, I connected with the powers that be at these companies, tied the afor mentioned event coordinator into the mix, and have since confirmed my attendance at this November's Art of the Carolinas: a four day indulgence in all things art hosted by Jerry's Artarama in Raleigh. www.jerrysartevents.com/artofca20.html
Look for me to be fully exhausted yet glowing and smiling as I depart a second time this year from Raleigh-Durham. I intend to give that tri-city area a full dose of the goodness of encaustic and all that R&F and Ampersand are about!
